The Empty Stocking Fund, started 111 years ago by a reporter named Harry "Dutch" Ervin
was created to help bring Christmas to children in Saint John and the surrounding area.

Harry Ervin (born in August, 1874) got the inspiration to collect money after he saw two
poorly dressed children standing outside the Manchester Robertson Allison store at Christmas.

"Dutch" had that scene etched into his mind and he couldn't rest until he did something about what he witnessed.

He dipped into his own funds and with some some help from a couple of local groups, he raised $700! On that Christmas Eve,
along with Charles Wilkins and Thomas Longdon, he delivered the Christmas gifts to needy families in Saint John.
